"The starting point of achievement is desire."

In light of all the new, exciting, amazing, etc. things beginning to take place in this life i've been gifted with, i figured its time for me to start sharing these with anyone willing to listen. So here goes nothing...

Five days ago 65 young adults from all across America came together on a small lakeside college campus with dreams, fears, expectations, and countless other emotions overwhelming our thoughts.

What are we doing here?

What are we getting ourselves into?

Are we insane for even considering this?

But, as the weekend progressed those thoughts and those fears begin to show themselves in a different light. Friendships begin to blossom, the tough conversations happened, tears and smiles were shared, and love and life began to take the upper hand.

The journeys each of us has taken to come together on that small little campus may look very different, but there is one thing we all share. The desire to be the change we want to see in this world. And not to be that change by yelling, screaming or jumping up and down. But, to be that change through the amazingly simple concept of accompaniment. To walk along side each other, our brothers and sisters, and that ever so beautiful three in one. We choose to live, to love and to share. To live our life rather then plan for one we can't forsee. To simply "be", in the faith that we are always becoming something bigger. To be joined together in relationship with one another and called into a global community. Our journey is just beginning together and the profound love, excitement and joy we share is already overwhelming. I can only imagine how these things are going to grow in the coming months and year of service together.

The Road Not Taken

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim
Because it was grassy and wanted wear,
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I marked the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
So, here's to 65 amazing, crazy and outstanding young people who have taken the leap. We're taking the road less traveled. What difference it is that will be made is yet to be seen, but a difference it will be.
Let the journey begin!

  1. Keenan, this is beautiful! I was also thrilled to become a part of the YAGM community this last weekend. As I was telling Ole, it was so refreshing to be surrounded by people who recognized the profundities of the problems in the world around us but weren't thwarted by chronic pessimism and the urge to just give up. It was so inspiring to see people who saw themselves as agents of change (without falling into traps of cultural imperialism, hegemonic globalization, or messianic egos)! I cannot wait to be surrounded by that energy again!
